Why JOOLA turns up second-hand so often
Two reasons, and neither is that the paddles are bad. JOOLA has had the most visible presence at the top of the professional game for several seasons, so a lot of players buy in at flagship prices to find out what the fuss is about. And the line has iterated quickly, which means each new generation pushes the previous one into the second-hand market in volume.
That is good news for a buyer. The paddle that was the most talked-about in the sport eighteen months ago is now a used paddle, and it is still the paddle it was.
The check that matters more here than anywhere
The thermoformed generations — the foam-injected perimeter construction that JOOLA helped popularise — are where used condition matters most in the entire category.
The failure mode is internal separation, and it is close to invisible. A paddle can look immaculate and have a perimeter that has let go. Worse, delamination often makes a paddle temporarily hotter rather than deader, so a seller can genuinely believe it is playing well.
The test is the tap test, run slowly around the perimeter rather than across the face: you are listening for a change in pitch between one section of edge and another. Anything inconsistent is a decline, not a discount. Every JOOLA that reaches the shop here has had that check run by hand.
Face texture, and what it is worth
JOOLA's raw carbon faces are a large part of what people buy the paddles for. They grip the ball hard when fresh and they wear smooth with play, and that wear is the biggest single factor in what a used one is worth.
A used JOOLA with texture left is worth paying up for. One that has gone smooth is a control paddle now — still a good paddle, but not the one the reviews are describing, and the price should say so. This is the specification that photographs worst and gets misdescribed most often in private sales.
